How does Elsy keep my conversations and reminders private?
Your conversations with Elsy are recorded and stored securely so she can remember what you tell her, and your stored data is hosted in the EU. Your family never sees transcripts or recordings, apart from life stories you send them. What else they see, from an alert to your reminders and what Elsy remembers, depends on their level in Your circle.
Elsy is an AI companion you talk with, and she helps with your reminders and medicines. Here's how your conversations and reminders are protected, and who in your family can see what.
How does Elsy protect your conversations?
Your conversations with Elsy are recorded and stored securely so Elsy can remember what you tell her, and your stored data is hosted in the EU. What you say is processed by AI services in the United States so Elsy can hear you, answer and remember. The app tells you which services those are before your first conversation. Your family never sees transcripts or recordings of your conversations, apart from the life stories you send them, which contain your own words and can include short excerpts of your voice.
How your data is secured
Elsy stores your data on servers in the EU and encrypts it, both when it's stored and when it's sent. Encryption doesn't mean no one else can ever see it, though. Elsy's technical team is bound by confidentiality and can see conversations when they need to fix problems and improve Elsy. The privacy policy spells this out.
What can your family see?
Depending on their level in Your circle, your family can see summaries of how you're doing. At Care partner they also see your reminders and medicines, and at Full trust they also see what Elsy remembers about you. A life story reaches your family only when you send it or turn on automatic sharing. See more about what your family can see.
The sharing levels
If you set Elsy up yourself, you decide how much each family member can see. You'll find the levels under Your circle on the Profile tab (in older versions of the app, under Settings):
- Stories only: the life stories you send, your name and your photo.
- Safety net: also an alert if a conversation suggests something may be wrong.
- Wellbeing: also how you're doing over time.
- Care partner: also your reminders and medicines, which they can help you with.
- Full trust: also what Elsy remembers about you.
If a family member set Elsy up for you and gave consent on your behalf, everyone in your circle is at Full trust, and that family member manages the circle.
What data does Elsy store?
Elsy stores what she needs to talk with you and keep your reminders up to date. That includes your conversations, what Elsy remembers about you, your reminders, your medicine times and when you've taken a dose, and your life stories. All of it is stored securely and used to help you and to improve Elsy.
How your data is used, and how to delete it
We never sell your personal data, and we don't use it to train general AI models. If you want your data deleted, you can delete your account in the app's settings. If a family member set Elsy up for you, they're the one who can delete the account. Read more about the safeguards an AI companion should have.
Why does privacy matter to Elsy?
You tell Elsy about your day, your family and your life. To talk freely, you need to know what happens to all of that: what gets stored, and who can see what.
Trusting your AI companion
You should be able to trust the AI companion you talk with, and that means knowing how your data is handled. There's also practical advice on using an AI assistant safely.
“But it also has to be someone you trust. And you're happy with the answers you get, because they're real answers.”
Helge, 72, talks with Elsy (translated from Danish)
Are your reminders and medicines private?
Your reminders and medicines are yours. When you tell Elsy you've taken your medicine, or tap Taken in the notification, she notes it, so she can tell you later if you're not sure. Your family sees your reminders and medicines only at the Care partner or Full trust level.
Help with your day
Elsy helps you keep track of your daily tasks. Say something like "Remind me about the dentist on Thursday at 10," and the reminder arrives as a notification on your phone. Anyone who looks at your screen can see it, so you decide how much it says. See more examples of reminders and daily routines.
How to get started
Download Elsy from the App Store or Google Play. Before your first conversation, the app tells you which AI services help Elsy. Once you've given your permission, tap Talk to Elsy. You can try Elsy free for 3 days on your own phone. Here's how Elsy works, step by step.
Frequently asked questions
Who can see my conversations with Elsy?
Your family never sees transcripts or hears recordings of your conversations, apart from the life stories you send them, which contain your own words and can include short excerpts of your voice. What else they see depends on their level in Your circle, from the stories you send up to what Elsy remembers about you at Full trust. Elsy's technical team can see conversations when they need to fix problems, and what you say is processed by AI services in the United States so Elsy can hear you and answer.
Where is my data stored, and is it sold?
Your stored data is kept on servers in the EU, and we never sell it. We don't use it to train general AI models either. What you say is processed by AI services in the United States so Elsy can hear you, answer and remember, and the app tells you which ones before you start.
What does Elsy do to protect my privacy?
Your conversations are stored securely and encrypted, and your family never sees transcripts or recordings of them. A life story reaches your family only when you send it or turn on automatic sharing, and it contains your own words and can include short excerpts of your voice. If you set Elsy up yourself, you choose the level for each person in Your circle.
Can my family change my reminders?
Yes, if they have the Care partner or Full trust level in Your circle. Then they can see your reminders and medicines and help you set them up. A reminder a family member has set up is marked Set by your caregiver, and only they can change it. You can still mark it as done and record that you've taken your medicine. If something's wrong, you can ask Elsy to send your family member a message.
